WINCHESTER

The city is quite small but exceptionally beautiful. It was King Alfred's capital city, and for some years it was the capital of England.

Winchester Cathedral. The foundations at the north-east end began to sink in the soggy ground about 50 years ago, and the building was rescued by a diver packing in bags of cement.
